From Tortillas, empanadas, salsas and various others, Mexican food bears lot of resemblance to Indian Cuisine. Use of fresh herbs and spices most common to Indian cuisine intrigues me to find out more about Mexican food and their culture. Today`s Chicken Burrito recipe is the Indianised version for “Global Kadai” ~ The burrito is a Mexican dish that consists of a flour tortilla filled with a combination of ingredients that may include salsa, pico de gallo, beans, rice, meat, seafood, cheese, sour cream, guacamole and lettuce. I have used very less ingredients for a fresh flavorful Burrito.
Some facts on Burrito:
- The burrito is a traditional food in the city of Juárez in northern Mexico.
- The word burrito means “little donkey” in Spanish. Some say that this name was used because a rolled up tortilla resembles a donkey’s ear; others think it has more to do with the rolled up blankets donkeys traditionally carry in Mexico.
- Authentic Mexican burritos are thin and contain only one or two ingredients — usually meat. The San Francisco Mission-style burrito, on the other hand, is filled with all sorts of ingredients, is tightly wrapped in aluminum foil and is known for its hefty size.
- In Mexico, burritos are called tacos de harina, which translates to “flour tacos.”
- In Northern Mexico, burritos are eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
- According to Mexican popular tradition, the burrito was first created by Juan Mendez during the Mexican Revolution. Mendez ran a taco street stand and to keep his food warm for customers, Juan decided to wrap it in a large flour tortilla. People loved it, told all their friends, and soon, Mendez had more business than he knew what to do with.
- The San Francisco Mission Style Burrito is the grandfather of the “wrap” which was invented by four business school students who spent time in the city.
Use your favorite ingredients and chicken recipe and roll them in Rotis to create an Indian Burrito/Wrap. Chicken Burrito ~ My contribution to Global Kadai hosted by Divya of Dil Se.
Ingredients:
- 4 Rotis/Chappatis
- 2 cups chicken cooked & shredded
- 1/2 teaspoon chilli powder
- 1/2 teaspoon Sakthi chicken masala powder
- 1 cup finely chopped onion
- 1 cup finely chopped tomatoes
- 2 green chillies finely chopped
- finely chopped chopped cilantro
- 1/2 cup shredded Mexican cheese blend
Procedure:
- Heat a tablespoon oil in a kadai/pan. Add the chicken and sauté well for few minutes. Add the chilli powder, sakthi masala and salt and saute well for another 2 minutes until the raw smell of the chilli powder leaves. Keep aside.
- Mix the onions, tomatoes, green chillies, cilantro and some salt. Set aside.
- Place some ( 1/4 of the 1/2 cup cheese ) of cheese onto each warm roti/chappati. Then place about 1/4 of chicken on the cheese. Top with 1/4 of onion mixture. Roll up, and serve.
Looks splendid. I know it would have tasted good too. Nice presentation. Looks very tempting.
